ZAMBIANS have joined the international community in mourning the death of a 12-year-old boy, Abel Mwansa Jr, who was shot dead at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada.
The child was among those who lost their lives, while others were injured, during the shooting incident whose motive is yet to be established.
In a statement, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe said Government learnt with profound shock of the tragic mass shooting that occurred on February 10, 2026, at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, an incident that claimed the lives of innocent people, including children, and left many others injured.
“We extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families for the loss of their loved ones in this senseless act of violence. We join the people and the Government of Canada in mourning this devastating loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Tumbler Ridge community as they seek healing and comfort in the wake of this tragedy,” Mr Haimbe said.
He said Government was heartbroken by the loss of the young Zambian whose promising life had been cut short in the tragic incident.
“To Abel’s parents, Mr and Mrs Abel Mwansa, the entire family and indeed Zambia at large, we offer our sincere condolences and share in the collective grief. We honour his memory and the joy he brought to those who knew him, and we stand in solidarity with his family during this most difficult time,” he said.
Mr Haimbe said Government reaffirmed its support for the fundamental rights to safety and security in all communities around the world, adding that global cooperation remained critical in preventing such tragedies.

POLICE have charged a 44-year-old Lusaka woman with child stealing after DNA analysis proved that she is not the biological mother of a six-week-old baby allegedly abducted in Kanyama Compound last year.
The suspect, identified as Esther Musonda Phiri, is accused of stealing the infant on October 28 last year in the Mbasela area of Kanyama Compound.
In November, police apprehended Ms Phiri after she was identified as the suspect during an identification parade.
Investigations revealed that Ms Phiri allegedly renamed the child “Jenipher Monta Mwila” and forged documents, including an Under-Five Card, which she used to falsely claim the baby as her own.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that DNA analysis conducted by the National Forensic Science and Biometrics Department established that Ms Phiri is not the child’s mother.
Mr Chilabi said biological samples were obtained from the child, the complainant Astridah Chanda, and the suspect in line with Zambia Police Service standard operating procedures.
He said that on February 4, 2026, police received results confirming that Ms Chanda is the biological mother of the child, while Ms Phiri was conclusively excluded.
“As a result, the suspect has been formally charged with Child Stealing, contrary to Section 171(1)(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia,” Mr Chilabi said.
He added that investigations into additional charges of Forgery, contrary to Section 347, and Uttering False Documents, contrary to Section 352 of the Penal Code, in relation to the falsified Under-Five Card, are ongoing.
Mr Chilabi confirmed that the child remains under the temporary care of the Department of Social Welfare pending the outcome of court proceedings.

A 20-year-old University of Zambia(UNZA) Great East Road campus student is nursing serious injuries after being hit by a Toyota Mark X as she was crossing the road within campus.
Zanele Sichoonga sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital while a an irate instant justice mob of suspected students pounced on the driver.
Police Public relations officer Godfrey Chilabi said in a statement the accused happened on February 7, 2026, around 03:30 hours, within UNZA Great East Campus.
“The pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being hit by a motor vehicle and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where she is currently admitted and receiving medical treatment,” Mr Chilabi said.
He names the driver of the Toyota Mark X, registration number CAG 1877, as Stephen Lombe, aged 29, of Chamba Valley.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the pedestrian was crossing the road and was hit by an oncoming motor vehicle
“Following the accident, a group of suspected students allegedly mobbed and assaulted the driver and damaged the motor vehicle.
“Police officers rushed to the scene and rescued the driver from the mob. He sustained injuries and was taken to Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital, where he was treated and later discharged,” Mr Chilabi said.
And the Zambia Police Service has dismissed as false information circulating on social media alleging that the driver involved in this accident is the son of the Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Honourable Jack Mwiimbu.
Mr Chilabi sia father information is false, malicious, and misleading.
“There is no relationship between the driver and the Minister.
The Service strongly condemns the deliberate spread of malicious falsehood and and urges members of the public to disregard these false claims,” he said.
Police investigations are ongoing, and the driver is awaiting formal charges.

A Bank of Zambia (BoZ) money truck has been involved in a road traffic accident on the Great North Road near Mulungushi University.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the accident occurred on February 6, 2026, around 15:00 hours and involved a Mercedes-Benz Actros ALF 1667 owned by the Bank of Zambia, which was travelling towards Kabwe.
Mr Chilabi said the truck sustained damage to the front cabin and container.
He said the driver and a passenger sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Kabwe Central Hospital for treatment before being discharged.
“Preliminary investigations suggest that excessive speed may have contributed to the accident, as the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and overturned,” Mr Chilabi said.
Meanwhile, police in Lusaka recorded a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on February 6, 2026, around 23:00 hours along Church Road at the Flyover Bridge.
Mr Chilabi said the accident involved a motorcyclist who was travelling towards the Central Business District.
“The victim, an unidentified male motorcyclist estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old, sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The body is in the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary pending postmortem examination and identification,” he said.
He said the motorcycle was extensively damaged and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Mr Chilabi appealed to members of the public to assist police in identifying the deceased.
“Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station,” he said.
