A LUSAKA maid is expected to appear in court tomorrow after admitted stealing about US$13,000 belonging to her employer and was consequently detained after breaching bond conditions.
The case comes up today for possible reconciliation after Violet Mwanza informed the court last week that he relatives are willing to pay back the money she admitted stealing.
Ms Mwanza, 30, is charged with theft by servant.
Evidence is that between April 1, and 28, 2025, Mwanza, being employed by Maybin Simbeye as a maid, stole US$13,000 belonging to Mr Simbeye.
Mwanza stopped attending court, prompting magistrate Mwandu Sakala to issue a bench warrant against her.
When the case came up last week, for return of bench warrant, Mwanza showed up at court and apologized for having missed previous hearings.
She explained together with her surety that she had traveled to the Copperbelt to job hunt and failed to return on time because she had no transport money.
She was detained after her sureties withdrew from representing her.
After the charge was read out, she pleaded guilty and blamed her action on envy.
“It is because of envy and wanting to have good things which my friends have,” the accused said and told the court her relatives are willing to pay back the money.
“The offence is a felony, so, am unable to reconcile you with the complainant but if the State wishes to make a necessary application, they can do so,” magistrate Sakala said.
The prosecution team said it would consult with the complainant over negotiation.

A 24-year-old student has died in a road traffic accident on the Great East Road near Katende Market in Chongwe District.
The deceased, Selemani Bupe Temwanani, was driving a Toyota Auris towards Lusaka when he allegedly lost control due to excessive speed and collided head-on with a Sino Howo truck and trailer.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the accident occurred today January 29, 2026, at about 07:30 hours.
He said the Sino Howo truck and trailer, registration numbers CAE 100ZM and CAD 8681ZM, was being driven by Zulu Saili, 40, of Makeni in Lusaka, while the Toyota Auris, registration number BLC 6833, was driven by Mr Temwanani.

BEFORE businessman Harry Findlay ordered to pay a K240,000 cummilative fine after being found guilty of immigration related allegations, his lawyers pleaded with the court not to jail but fine him.
Leading the mitigation, defence lawyer Dasislava Findlay prayed that the court be lenient to Mr Findlay who was a businessman providing jobs and paying taxes, contributing to economic growth.
Ms Findlay said the offence her client is facing has an option of a fine instead of a custodial sentence.
“We urged the court to note that there are no aggravating factors and the position of the law on sentencing is such that as held in a number of authorities where the statute provides for a fine.
And accused is a first time offender, the court should impose a fine”.
Ms Findlay, who quoted various precedent, said it is a fact that Mr Findlay is a prominent businessman and responsible for the employment of a large number of employees.
“They, together with their dependants and families are dependant on this employment provided by the accused. It is a fact your honour that as a businessman, he is a tax payer, contributing to the economy of our country, through the payment of tax, providing employment, business activities,” the lawyer emphasized
She added that he is also a family man- both a father and grand father.
“He is 13th in a family of 13 and has many nieces and nephews who equally depend on him as a father figure.
“It is a fact that the accused has a medical condition on the court record, that his health is poor. These are all factors that we urge the court to consider in relation to his personal circumstances” Ms Dasislava said.
She added that there has been no evidence that the State has suffered any prejudice resulting from the offences for which the accused was found guilty.
“There is no evidence that there was any serious criminal activities that were perpetrated. We urged the court to note that the offenses are regulatory in nature, hence the provision of a fine,” Ms Dasislava said.
She said the defence was alive to the fact that it is all in the discretion of the court whether or not to fine or jail a convict.
“However, we urged the court to note that really, this is not an individual that ought to be sent to imprisonment. He is an individual that can contribute to society, business activities, economic activities. The offence would not proportionally result in custodial sentence” Ms Dasislava, who is the wife of the accused, said.
Another defence lawyer Charles Changano added that the court should consider the fact that prisons are already full and custodial sentences should he avoided.
Lusaka acting chief resident magistrate Sylvia Munyinya fined Mr Findlay K180,000 after finding him guilty of possession of more than one passport.
For count two where he was accused of being found with forged immigration endorsement, the magistrate fined him K60,000, bringing a total of K240,000.
If he fails to pay, he will serve six months simple imprisonment in count one and four months simple imprisonment for count two.
