POLICE have warned that any motorist who fails to stop and render assistance after being involved in a road traffic accident will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
The warning follows concern over the rising number of hit-and-run road traffic accidents.
In a media statement, police spokesperson said many hit-and-run incidents have resulted in fatalities.
Mr Chilabi reminded motorists that under the Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002, any driver involved in a road traffic accident is legally required to immediately stop at the scene and render appropriate assistance to anyone injured.
He said failure to comply with these obligations constitutes an offence under the law.
“The law further stipulates that a driver may only rely on a valid defence if they reasonably believe that stopping would endanger their own safety or the safety of other occupants in the vehicle. In such cases, the driver must report the accident to the nearest police station without delay,” he said.
Mr Chilabi said police have observed that some motorists wilfully or negligently flee accident scenes without any legitimate threat, adding that such behaviour is unacceptable and subject to prosecution.
He said motorised patrols will continue, and road safety awareness programmes will be strengthened to promote responsible driving.
“Motorists are urged to exercise extra caution, strictly adhere to traffic regulations and act responsibly in the event of an accident. Saving lives is a shared responsibility,” Mr Chilabi said.

POLICE have recorded a road traffic accident in which a police officer died while musician sustained serious injuries.
The accident occurred yesterday, February 14, 2026, around 16:40 hours in the Machinga area, about 12 kilometres south of Monze town.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Lexus improperly attempted to overtake a truck, resulting in a head-on collision with an oncoming Toyota Axio that had the right of way.
In a statement, police spokesperson said the accident involved two motor vehicles: a Toyota Lexus, registration number BLD 3803ZM, and a Toyota Axio, registration number BAD 7178.
Mr Chilabi said the Toyota Lexus was driven by Benjamin Phiri, 42, of Lilayi in Lusaka, who was driving towards Chisekesi at the time of the accident.
He said Mr Phiri sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
Mr Chilabi said a passenger in the Lexus, David Banda, 45, of Silverest Area in Lusaka, popularly known as General Ozzy,also sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
Mr Chilabi said the Toyota Axio was driven by Michael Nyirenda, 55, a police officer of Site and Service Compound in Monze District.
He said the officer sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.
“The body of the deceased has been deposited at Monze Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination,” he said.
Mr Chilabi said a passenger in the Toyota Axio, Mwiya Munalula, 45, a police officer of Manungu Residential Area in Monze District, sustained minor injuries.
He said Ms Munalula was treated and later discharged from Monze Mission Hospital.
“Both vehicles were extensively damaged,” Mr Chilabi said.

POLICE have arrested five people for allegedly harassing and humiliating a woman by publishing defamatory content accusing her of abducting and torturing a journalist.
In a statement, police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said a report was lodged by Idah Choongo, aged 30, of Lusaka, who complained that unknown individuals had published defamatory and harassing information about her on Facebook pages identified as Fyambe Media, Kanyama Zed TV and Kumwesu.
Mr Chilabi said investigations were immediately instituted, leading to the identification of suspects.
“On February 12, 2026, a follow-up operation led to the apprehension of five suspects, namely Silvester Kaumba, aged 42, of Kamwala South; Edwin Daka, aged 40; Chrispine Samutumwa, aged 27, of Makeni Villa, Lusaka; Musheck Chinyama, aged 32; and Modrick Ngwala, aged 28. All the suspects are residents of Lusaka,” he said.
Mr Chilabi said following investigations, the suspects were formally charged with the offence of harassment and humiliation.
He said the suspects were released on police bond on the same day and are awaiting court appearance.
Mr Chilabi further refuted allegations circulating on social media suggesting that the suspects were abducted.
He said officers from the Zambia Police Service followed all established legal procedures and human rights protocols during the apprehension and processing of the matter.
“Members of the public are urged to verify information with relevant authorities and to practise responsible reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation,” Mr Chilabi said.

A father of Ndola is on the run after allegedly causing the death of his eight-month-old daughter during a fight with his wife.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said a manhunt has been launched for David Zulu of Misundu Area in Ndola.
Mr Chilabi said the incident allegedly occurred on February 10, 2026, around 02:00 hours at the family residence, following a marital dispute between the suspect and his wife, the child’s mother.
He said that during the altercation, the suspect allegedly hit the infant on the head with a shovel, causing fatal injuries.
“With the help of neighbours, the child was rushed to Arthur Davison Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police officers responded to the incident and processed the scene.
“The body of the deceased has since been deposited at Ndola Teaching Hospital Mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examination and burial,” Mr Chilabi said.
He said the motive behind the incident has not yet been established and remains under investigation.
“The suspect fled the scene and is currently on the run, with efforts underway to apprehend him,” Mr Chilabi said.
