THE Lusaka Fitness Squad, Zambia’s largest amateur running club, is at it again! They’ve turned their passion for running into a lifeline for kids with heart disease, donating K63,015 to the National Heart Hospital.
The gesture follows a long-distance 56-kilometre run from Lusaka to Kafue by Dr. Donald Mumba, President of the Zambia Pediatric Association and an LFS member, who said he was inspired after witnessing the struggles of young patients.
“Many children born in Zambia, one out of every hundred, come with congenital heart diseases. They don’t choose this, and their hospital stays can be long and stressful,” Dr. Mumba.
“I wanted to make their time here more comfortable, giving them books, toys or play areas to feel at home while receiving treatment.”
Katai Chola, president of LFS, said the initiative is part of the club’s commitment to fitness, health and community service.
“Our hearts need exercise just like the rest of our bodies,” Chola said.
“Through our awareness campaigns, we received contributions from members and the general public, which we presented during Christmas. Today, we are back with another donation. This partnership is ongoing, it is not a one-off.”
Meanwhile, Senior Medical Superintendent Dr. Shumba, lauded the squad, saying their efforts go beyond running, touching the lives of children and families.
“This is more than a donation. It is a demonstration of collaboration, care, and dedication. Dr. Mumba and the Lusaka Fitness Squad have gone above and beyond to support children with heart disease,” Dr. Shumba said.
The funds will support child-friendly facilities at the hospital, including play areas and learning resources, ensuring young patients receive care in a comforting environment.
The squad has pledged continued engagement, promising to turn more kilometres into hope for Zambia’s children battling with congenital diseases.

The most recent death was recorded on January 12, 2026, in Nakonde District.

“Other affected provinces include Southern Province with 44 cases, Copperbelt with 37, Lusaka with 41, Muchinga with eight, North-Western with five and Central Province with two cases.

ZAMBIA is not among the countries importing Nestlé NAN infant formula that has been flagged for possible contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus.
According to media reports, Nestlé has announced a recall of certain batches of its infant nutrition products due to potential contamination with a toxin that may cause nausea and vomiting.
The recall followed a quality concern linked to an ingredient sourced from a major supplier.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has confirmed that Zambia is not among the countries that imported the affected infant formula.
Ministry of Health Principal Public Relations Officer Georgia Chimombo said the ministry, through its Food Safety Surveillance System under the Department of Public Health, engaged official international notification channels, including authorities in South Africa as the exporting country, to establish whether Zambia was among the affected importers.
She said the product in question is an infant formula known as NAN Special Pro 0–12 months, which has been flagged for potential contamination with cereulide, a toxin produced by a strain of bacteria called Bacillus cereus.
“The Ministry would like to inform members of the public that Zambia is not listed among the importing countries of this particular infant formula,” Ms Chimombo said.
She said the ministry has also directed food safety inspectors across the country to enhance surveillance, remove any non-compliant products from the market and take legal action where necessary.
“This applies to all food products, including those labelled in languages other than English.
“The public is advised to rely on official Government communication from the Ministry and be assured that all measures are being undertaken for continued surveillance,” Ms Chimombo said.
She said any member of the public who comes across the affected product should report the matter to the nearest district health office or the public health department under the local council.
