THE body of 12-year-old Abel Mwansa Jr., a young Zambian who tragically lost his life during the mass shooting that occurred on 10 February 2026 at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, arrived in the country yesterday, 28th February 2026.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Mulambo Haimbe, alongside Corry Van Gaal, Chargé d’Affaires of Canada to the Republic of Zambia, joined Bishop Steven Nkhata, the family representative, and other family members in receiving the body at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport(KKIA) yesterday.
Abel Mwansa Jr tragically died on February 10,2026 during a mass shooting at his school-Tubler Ridge Secondary, where seven others also lost their lives, while 25 were injured.
Speaking at KKIA, Mr Haimbe conveyed the Government’s deepest condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed continued solidarity with them during this profoundly difficult time.
The minister further indicated that the Government of the Republic of Zambia has provided the necessary logistical support to the bereaved family, working closely with the Government of Canada to facilitate the repatriation process.
And Ms. Van Gaal expressed deep regret over the tragic incident and extended heartfelt sympathies to the family, wishing them strength and comfort as they prepare to lay their loved one to rest.
This is contained in a statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation principal public relations officer Eva Hantontola-Chanda.
Ms Chanda said burial is expected to take place on Monday, 2nd March 2026, in Kitwe, Copperbelt Province.
Meanhwile, on the situation in the Middle East, Mr Haimbe assured that the Government is closely monitoring the evolving conflict and has put in place contingency evacuation plans for Zambians should the need arise.
The Minister emphasised that the Government remains fully committed to safeguarding the safety and welfare of all Zambians in the diaspora.

A rescue mission has retrieved the body of one of the two children who were thrown in Ngwerere River by their step mother.
The six-year-old child’s body was recovered yesterday as the search for the other two-year-old sibling’s remains continues.
On Thursday, the suspect, Mary Kachilika, 26, allegedly threw the children in the River, in what is suspected to be an act of jealousy, as she dose not have children of her own.
The incident happened in Meanwood Kwamwena, and a fisherman noticed the act and confronted the suspect he later apprehended.
Police have been conducting a search for the the children whose father Titus Kamanga and mother Fanny Kanyinji are in distressed.
In an update, Deputy Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha said following continued search efforts, the body of the six-year-old child has been retrieved from the Ngwerere River.
“The retrieval was successfully conducted by the Fire Brigade working jointly with officers from the Zambia Police Service.
Search operations for the second child are still ongoing, and efforts have been intensified to locate and recover the body,” Ms Kaitisha said.
As previously reported, Mary Kachilika, aged 26, of Meanwood Kwamwena Phase 4, remains in police custody in connection with the alleged incident.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
“The Zambia Police Service wishes to assure members of the public that every effort is being made to ensure justice is served. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses”.

A 26-year-old stepmother of Meanwood area in Lusaka, who is in a polygamous marriage, has allegedly murdered two children belonging to her co-wife by throwing them into the Ngwerere River.
The suspect, identified as Mary Kachilika, is married to Titus Kamanga in a polygamous union alongside her co-wife, Fanny Kanyinji, the mother of the deceased children.
The children are aged six and two. It is alleged that Kachilika, who joined the marriage in January last year, had grown resentful of her co-wife for having children, as she had been unable to conceive with their husband since entering the marriage, which allegedly led to her actions.
Police deputy public relations officer Chipo Kaitisha confirmed the incident in a statement.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that the complainant is in a polygamous marriage, having married his second wife on January 10, 2025.The second wife reportedly experienced disputes arising from jealousy, as one wife has children while the other does not.
“On the day of the incident, the husband had reportedly gone to work, while the first wife was outside doing house chores.
“The children were inside the house eating. The mother later heard the children crying and, upon checking, discovered they were missing. She followed the direction of the cries toward Ngwerere River,” Ms Kaitisha said.
She said that at the river, the children’s mother found Kachilika being pursued by a local fisherman.
“He is reported to have witnessed the accused allegedly throwing the children into the river and apprehended her.
“Police officers, together with Fire Brigade personnel, visited the scene. However, the bodies of the two children have not yet been recovered, and search operations are ongoing,” she said.
Ms Kaitisha said the suspect has since been apprehended, and investigations into the matter are continuing.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the New Dawn administration will this year recruit 4000 teachers and health workers, as part of government’s quest to improve service deliver.
Mr Hichilema told Parliament that 2000 teachers and 2000 health workers are earmarked for recruitment.
He said yesterday when he addressed Parliament to update the nation of the application of national values and principles, that the planned teacher recruitment will address barriers in access to education.
“The UPND New Dawn administration remains firmly committed to addressing economic and social barriers to children’s participation and progression in education.
“In 2021, we re-introduced the free education policy. As always, education remains the best investment, equaliser, and inheritance,” Me Hichilema said.
He said with the implementation of this policy, over 2.5 million children have been given the opportunity to go back to school.
Mr Hichilema said that to ensure access to quality education, his administration has recruited 41,917 teachers.
“This year, an additional 2,000 teachers will be recruited,” he said as Members of Parliament exclaimed with hiya, hiya.
Mr Hichilema said government has also scaled up support to vulnerable girls through the keeping girls in school initiative.
“The programme benefitted 127,233 girls in 2025, from 38,551 in 2021. The geographic coverage has also increased to 95 districts from 39 in 2021”.
Meanhwile, the President said Government will also recruit additional 2000 health workers to improve access to healthcare delivery.
“To promote human dignity and equity, the UPND New Dawn government prioritised investment in the health and wellness of our people.
“Since 2021, we have recruited over 18,000 health workers with an additional 2,000 to be recruited this year,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said government has continued to improve access to health services for our citizens through the construction and equipping of health facilities at all levels across the country.
