U.S. launches new airstrikes on southern Iran after alleged attack on commercial tankers

The United States has launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting military facilities and maritime infrastructure in southern Iran, according to U.S. officials.

The strikes reportedly targeted Bandar Abbas, Sirik Port, and Qeshm Island, with multiple explosions reported across the area during the early hours of July 8.

According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was carried out in response to an alleged attack by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on three commercial oil tankers transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Washington said the incident constituted a violation of the ceasefire framework reached last month.

The United States also announced the cancellation of Iran’s oil export licenses, while global oil prices reportedly climbed by more than 3% following the renewed escalation.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strikes, accusing Washington of violating the ceasefire agreement and warning that Tehran would take “all necessary measures” to defend its national security and interests.

The claims and counterclaims made by both sides have not been independently verified.
