SIXTEEN Tonse Alliance members have been arrested by police after being found locked in a room at a lodge while holding a meeting in Kalulushi.
The 16 were discovered in a room at Emerald Guest House in Kalulushi.
Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mr Mwala Yuyi said the group was picked up and charged with unlawful assembly.
He said the incident occurred on Saturday, February 21, 2026, after police received information about a meeting at the guest house suspected to involve Tonse Alliance members.
Mr Yuyi said police rushed to the scene and found three vehicles parked at the lodge.
“When a cleaner was asked about the whereabouts of the vehicle owners, he directed police to a room where the meeting was taking place,” he said.
Mr Yuyi said the room was locked when police arrived.
He said after knocking, the door was opened, revealing 16 people inside.
“During interviews, some said it was a meeting for silk, while others confirmed it was a Tonse Alliance meeting preparing for Women’s Day celebrations,” Mr Yuyi said.
He added that the 16 were detained in police cells for unlawful assembly, as they had no prior notification of the gathering.
Mr Yuyi said the 16 have since been formally arrested.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says his government will not condone, past, present and future corruption, and that Zambians should not celebrate corrupt people.
Mr Hichilema said that it is immoral to support corrupt activities and those people involved in the act.
“Society must abhor corruption, stealing from the school children, and its immoral even to support the people involved for whatever reason, its says show me your friends then I will know, most likely, who you are.
“Leaders in this house must walk together on this issue,” the President said.
Mr Hichilema said this during the fifth session of the 13th National Assembly where he updated the nation on progress mass in the application of national values and principles.
The President said the New Dawn administration is committed to promoting good governance and integrity in the nation.
“The fight against corruption is central to our work. We are now able to prosecute corruption and economic crimes within 5 months.
“Due the reforms that were made during the Judicial system, a huge contrast to what used to happen where some cases would take 20 years which was unacceptable”.
He said that the operation ‘asset recovery’ initiative is yielding results.
“We have made the largest ever recovery of assets in the history of our nation.
Real estate, vehicles, helicopters, as well as cash, have been recovered.
“We are returning these assets to the rightful owners, the citizens of Zambia.
We are walking the talk” Mr Hichilema said.
He also urged citizens to report corrupt people to Anti Corruption Commission(ACC), Drug Enforcement Commission(DEC) or the police-not on social media.
“Please take note of that, If you are corrupt, you are on your own. Simple.
“If you know a corrupt person, don’t go on social media, go the police, go to ACC, go to anybody, go to DEC, that’s it, not on social media because social media sometimes becomes abusive”

FIRED Minister of Health Elijah Muchima has dismissed as false assertions that President Hakainde Hichilema dismissed him because he voted against Bill 7 of 2025.
Dr Muchima said that if politician Chilufya Tayali were in Zambia, he would sue him for defamation of character over the allegations made against him.
The Ikelenge lawmaker said this last evening when he featured on Diamond Television.
When asked why he was fired on Wednesday, the former Lands Minister said he was unaware of the reasons because the dismissal letter did not state them, although some people have been speculating.
He said he is also wondering why he was relieved of his duties but is unhappy with some claims being made about his dismissal.
Dr Muchima said allegations that he connived with Mazabuka lawmaker Garry Nkombo in a bid to take over the UPND leadership, and that he voted against Bill 7, are untrue.
“Tayali should concentrate on his issues. He should not bring in things he does not understand and implicate people. Where is he getting this data?
“This Tayali, what he is committing is cybercrime.
“Where is Tayali getting this information to bring me into disrepute? I have been extremely loyal. How could I connive with Garry, and for what?”
He wondered why he is being accused of voting against Bill 7 when he is an “extremely” loyal UPND member who was actually a champion of the piece of legislation.
“Let’s be sober. I am the champion for Bill 7. I supported every step my boss asked us to take. God in heaven.”
The anchor then asked why people would falsely accuse him of conniving to take over UPND leadership with Mr Nkombo, who is the party’s elections chairperson.
“In life, as you grow up, be careful, even with your own wife or friends. People will start creating stories. This is an election year. If you can bring a Bible here, God knows what I did.
“I am not deceitful. In politics, people are not happy; they want to bring you down.”
Mr Muchima said, however, that there is an individual causing problems who wants to contest the Ikelenge parliamentary seat.
“I don’t want people creating negative and misleading statements that I want to unseat my President. One chap—the one causing problems, a former DC—was celebrating [my dismissal] two days ago. He will not make it.
“In life, be careful. Don’t think everyone will love you when they see you doing well; they start creating stories. This is an election year. Politics—people are not happy; they want to bring you down.”
The accountant and lawyer said he has been nothing but loyal to President Hichilema and will continue to be so.
“I am an accountant and a lawyer. I am one person who has never been fired before. I will never be deceitful, and if all these allegations are investigated, it will be seen that they are not true,” Mr Muchima said.

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says over the last four years, the United Party for National Development (UPND) has made progress in fostering patriotism and national unity.
Speaking when he addressed the nation on the progress made in the application of national values and principles during the Fifth Session of the 13th National Assembly, President Hichilema said the UPND administration has made steady progress in promoting Zambian products in order to support businesses and hardworking citizens.
He added that under the UPND New Dawn administration, there has been an unprecedented reduction in political violence and cadreism in the country.
“Under our watch, there is no room for political violence. There is no room for cadreism. There is no room for lawlessness. Let me be clear, no one is above the law,” President Hichilema said.
He further stated that the country’s stable and peaceful environment has attracted unprecedented investment, which is translating into more jobs, businesses, and other opportunities.
“Access to information and media freedom remains fundamental to democratic governance. Our administration has undertaken legal reforms to modernise the media landscape in the country,” President Hichilema said.
