The United States is expected to complete the full withdrawal of its troops from Iraq by September, marking the end of a military presence that began following the 2003 invasion that toppled the government of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
The American deployment in Iraq has lasted for more than 20 years, with U.S. forces playing various roles over the years, including combat operations, counterterrorism missions, and training and advising Iraqi security forces.
