🇿🇲BRIEFING | 3 Detained, 4 Sought Over Alleged Assault on Pupil, Destruction of UPND Campaign Materials
Police in Eastern Province have detained three suspected Tonse Pamodzi Alliance members while four others remain on the run following the alleged assault of a Grade 11 pupil and the destruction of UPND campaign materials in Chasefu District.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred on July 18 at Lusuntha Day Secondary School, where the suspects allegedly confronted Gabriel Nyirenda after he refused to remove UPND campaign posters displayed at a boarding house.
According to police, the group allegedly threatened to burn down the boarding house if the pupils did not disassociate themselves from the ruling party before removing and destroying campaign materials from the premises and nearby trees. The suspects are further accused of assaulting the pupil before leaving the scene.
Police have identified those in custody as Kaduba Zimba (37), Gift Mutonga (20) and Aaron Mutonga (24). The four suspects still being sought are Gilbert Mutonga, Ramson Njobvu, Danny Phiri and Mathews Tembo.
The incident adds to a series of election-related violence cases reported during the campaign period, as political parties continue canvassing for votes ahead of the August 13 general election. Investigations are ongoing.
