PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has directed the newly appointed Minister of Health Alex Katakwe to ensure medicines reach health facilities on time.
Mr Hichilema has observed that drugs lay idle in medical hubs instead of hospitals and clinics, where they are needed.
The President wants sanity in the distribution chain of medicines to avoid creating an artificial shortage of essential drugs and supplies.
Mr Hichilema said this yesterday when he swore in Dr Katakwe, Malama Mufunelo, as Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises, and Dr. Tuesday Bwalya as Permanent Secretary for Muchinga Province.
The President called for stability in the health sector and emphasized the importance of efficient management systems to ensure improved healthcare delivery.
He tasked Dr Katakwe to ensure there is sanity at Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency(ZAMMSA) so that medicines quickly reach health facilities.
“People in rural areas need those medicine,” Mr Hichilema said.
The President aso warned against corruption, and that the misuse of public resources undermines development efforts and denies citizens essential services.
He also urged the newly appointed officials to place the interests of Zambians above personal gain and serve with dedication and humility.
The President reminded the appointees of their constitutional duty to faithfully serve the Republic of Zambia and uphold the Constitution.
“Serve with humility….we are one Zambia, One Nation, don’t look at tribe”.
He further urged them to always prioritize national interests above personal ambitions, noting that Government officials must work tirelessly to improve the lives of citizens across the country.
Mr Hichilema also urged then to remain sober and avoid drunkenness which can affect their ability to make sound decisions.
The President said the reason he does not drink alcohol is to avoid “loss of control”.
And the President urged Mr Mufunelo to ensure transparency in accessing empowerment programmes under his ministry, while Dr Bwalya was advised to ensure people of Muchinga adequately benefit from Constituency Development Fund(CDF).

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says the New Dawn administration will this year recruit 4000 teachers and health workers, as part of government’s quest to improve service deliver.
Mr Hichilema told Parliament that 2000 teachers and 2000 health workers are earmarked for recruitment.
He said yesterday when he addressed Parliament to update the nation of the application of national values and principles, that the planned teacher recruitment will address barriers in access to education.
“The UPND New Dawn administration remains firmly committed to addressing economic and social barriers to children’s participation and progression in education.
“In 2021, we re-introduced the free education policy. As always, education remains the best investment, equaliser, and inheritance,” Me Hichilema said.
He said with the implementation of this policy, over 2.5 million children have been given the opportunity to go back to school.
Mr Hichilema said that to ensure access to quality education, his administration has recruited 41,917 teachers.
“This year, an additional 2,000 teachers will be recruited,” he said as Members of Parliament exclaimed with hiya, hiya.
Mr Hichilema said government has also scaled up support to vulnerable girls through the keeping girls in school initiative.
“The programme benefitted 127,233 girls in 2025, from 38,551 in 2021. The geographic coverage has also increased to 95 districts from 39 in 2021”.
Meanhwile, the President said Government will also recruit additional 2000 health workers to improve access to healthcare delivery.
“To promote human dignity and equity, the UPND New Dawn government prioritised investment in the health and wellness of our people.
“Since 2021, we have recruited over 18,000 health workers with an additional 2,000 to be recruited this year,” Mr Hichilema said.
He said government has continued to improve access to health services for our citizens through the construction and equipping of health facilities at all levels across the country.

THE Lusaka Fitness Squad, Zambia’s largest amateur running club, is at it again! They’ve turned their passion for running into a lifeline for kids with heart disease, donating K63,015 to the National Heart Hospital.
The gesture follows a long-distance 56-kilometre run from Lusaka to Kafue by Dr. Donald Mumba, President of the Zambia Pediatric Association and an LFS member, who said he was inspired after witnessing the struggles of young patients.
“Many children born in Zambia, one out of every hundred, come with congenital heart diseases. They don’t choose this, and their hospital stays can be long and stressful,” Dr. Mumba.
“I wanted to make their time here more comfortable, giving them books, toys or play areas to feel at home while receiving treatment.”
Katai Chola, president of LFS, said the initiative is part of the club’s commitment to fitness, health and community service.
“Our hearts need exercise just like the rest of our bodies,” Chola said.
“Through our awareness campaigns, we received contributions from members and the general public, which we presented during Christmas. Today, we are back with another donation. This partnership is ongoing, it is not a one-off.”
Meanwhile, Senior Medical Superintendent Dr. Shumba, lauded the squad, saying their efforts go beyond running, touching the lives of children and families.
“This is more than a donation. It is a demonstration of collaboration, care, and dedication. Dr. Mumba and the Lusaka Fitness Squad have gone above and beyond to support children with heart disease,” Dr. Shumba said.
The funds will support child-friendly facilities at the hospital, including play areas and learning resources, ensuring young patients receive care in a comforting environment.
The squad has pledged continued engagement, promising to turn more kilometres into hope for Zambia’s children battling with congenital diseases.

MINISTER of Health Elijah Muchima says that as of January 15 this year, the country recorded a cumulative total of 639 cholera cases, with 614 recoveries and 10 deaths.
The most recent death was recorded on January 12, 2026, in Nakonde District.
Speaking at a media briefing, Dr Muchima said the outbreak has largely been concentrated in Northern Province, particularly in Mpulungu, Nsama and Senga Hill districts, which together have reported more than 501 cases.
“Other affected provinces include Southern Province with 44 cases, Copperbelt with 37, Lusaka with 41, Muchinga with eight, North-Western with five and Central Province with two cases.
To date, no cholera cases have been reported in Luapula, Western or Eastern provinces, where enhanced surveillance and preparedness measures are equally in place,” he said.
Dr Muchima said there are currently 17 patients admitted in Lusaka District.
He further disclosed that the ministry plans to administer oral cholera vaccines to 500 inmates in Monze.
Meanwhile, Zambia recorded 241 confirmed measles cases between January and December 2025. Dr Muchima said targeted vaccination activities and intensified surveillance are underway to prevent further spread.
He added that the country continues to maintain strong polio surveillance through active case search and environmental sampling.
“On Mpox, Zambia has tested more than 2,000 suspected cases since the first confirmed case in October 2024, of which 367 have been confirmed,” Dr Muchima said.
