US Embassy deletes Gonzales rant video after Zambians roast ambassador
THE United States Embassy in Zambia has quietly deleted a Facebook video of outgoing US Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales after it sparked a storm of criticism from Zambians online.
In the now deleted video, the outspoken Gonzales took a swipe at corruption and governance issues in the country, remarks that did not sit well with many netizens who roasted the diplomat like the maize sold at 10 Miles.
The video, which was initially shared on the embassy’s official Facebook page was later pulled down after the backlash intensified with many notable stakeholders raising alarm.
Gonzales had earlier appeared on a named podcast where he expressed concern over what he described as high levels of corruption in Zambia.
And speaking during his farewell function on Thursday, the ambassador warned that corruption and governance challenges risk straining relations between Zambia and the United States.
He said the UPND administration’s “no sacred cow” stance on corruption was mere talk.
The diplomat also questioned the appointment of the Anti-Corruption Commission director general, citing allegations that she was under investigation.

Pulling down the unacceptable and diplomatic comments from the official page as reported is a welcome gesture and a step in the right direction mend the current strained and very questionable diplomatic relationship of the two countries due to careless utterances from the former US representative. However, this damaging video is still circulating on the social media.
This should be followed up by an official apology from the US Embassy for this serious dilomatic blunder.
It is not acceptable that a diplomat should directly interfer with the internal governance issues within the countries the reside in. They may use diplomatic channels to air out their grivenance or suggestions.
That is how a civilized relationship should be. It is appalling that such serious allegations can be uttered without giving evidence to such claims.
Generalized statements don’t help but stir up unnecessary pressure on those in authority. Especially that this is very close to the general elections. This appears to be a deliberate plot to cause confusion and dislike of a legitimately elected government. We.need and.demand for more pragmatic reconciltory action to correct this very unacceptable and behavior of their undignified representative. He has not reflected a good image of his country which is most unfortunate.
