I’ll push for wildlife officers to be classified as a military unit – L/Stone aspiring candidate
LIVINGSTONE UPND Parliamentary candidate Gracious ‘Dillon’ Mayangwa says he will push for wildlife officers to be classified as a military unit.
And Mayangwa says the animal/human conflict being experienced in Livingstone annually is as a result of failed city planning by the council.
In an interview Mayangwa said he will push for improved condition of service for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) once elected as member of parliament.
“We do acknowledge the great works that wildlife officers do under very difficult conditions, we wish to encourage them that once elected as member of parliament for Livingstone Central, I will push for improvement of their conditions of service, and also push that they be classified by an Act of Parliament as a Military Unit instead of being graded as civilians,” Mayangwa said.
“There is no department or unit of the government that handles guns on a daily basis being classified as civilians. They are shot at by poachers, and yet when they protest they get threatened of being charged for mutiny, as as area member of parliament for Livingstone Central I will push for their classification as a Military Unit. Not even soldiers are at risk of being shot at than wildlife officers, but are civilians despite holding and handling AK47’s 24/7”.
With regards to animal/human conflict Mayangwa suggested mapping out residential areas so as to erect electric/stone spiked fences as has been done at Radisson Blu and Avani hotels.
He accused the council for allocating plots along elephant corridors without putting measures to safeguard both elephants and human beings.
“It is not a secrets that it is us humans at fault, we know the areas that are elephant corridors, but councillors still gave out plots in those areas without thinking of the conflicts, without thinking of how to protect the animals and humans,” said Mayangwa.
“Elephants play a big part in revenue collection in the tourism sector, but how is it that when a human being is slaughtered by an elephant there is no compensation? Also why don’t we put up electric wire/stone spiked fences to control elephants away from humans as they have done at Radisson Blu and Avani Hotels. We can easily sketch out the residential areas, and leave enough room for elephants, so that they don’t stray into homes and areas that are heavily populated”.
