Stiffen debt default laws to prevent civil servants from overborrowing – Haabazoka
ECONOMIST Professor Lubinda Haabazoka says Zambia needs stiffer debt default laws to compel public service workers to repay their loans. He notes that many people borrow money without the intention of paying it back. On Friday, the Bank of Zambia (BoZ) raised concern over civil servants’ failure to repay loans, warning that the trend poses risks to the country’s financial sector. On the other hand, the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) called for urgent talks with government over rising loan defaults among civil servants. However, in an interview, Sunday, Prof Haabazoka said if laws were made more difficult or punitive for those who borrow money and fail to repay it, many people probably be scared to go and borrow….
