From Janitor to Principal: Joseph “Gabe” Sonnier’s 27-Year Journey at Port Barre Elementary, US
UNITED STATES: Joseph “Gabe” Sonnier’s journey from school janitor to principal is being shared across the US as a story of perseverance.
For 27 years, Sonnier maintained classrooms, cleaned hallways, and handled daily duties at Port Barre Elementary in Louisiana. His path changed when former principal Westley Jones told him he could do more in the classroom than behind the scenes.
At 39, while working full-time and supporting a family, Sonnier went back to college. He earned degrees from Louisiana State University Eunice and the University of Louisiana.
In 2008, after completing his bachelor’s degree, he returned to Port Barre Elementary — this time as a teacher in the same school where he once pushed a mop. He later earned a master’s in education.
In 2013, Sonnier reached the peak of his journey when he was named principal of the school. The building where he once stored cleaning supplies became the one he now leads.
His story is widely shared as proof that your current job doesn’t have to define your future. Sonnier’s message to students and teachers: circumstances can change with determination and education.
