Zimbabwe’s Divine Lunga Survives Shooting in Johannesburg; Police Open Attempted Murder Probe

Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga survived a shooting in Johannesburg on Sunday, South African police confirmed.

The 31-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns defender and Warriors star was not injured after a gunman opened fire on his vehicle in Hillbrow. Police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said an attempted murder case has been opened. No arrests have been made and the motive is still under investigation.

According to South African newspaper, The Citizen, Lunga was driving to church with his younger brother when the attacker allegedly mistook him for an undercover officer. Reuters has not independently verified that detail.

South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime.

Lunga has 21 caps for Zimbabwe and featured in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Since joining Sundowns in 2021, he’s won four PSL titles and the CAF Champions League.

Mamelodi Sundowns and the Zimbabwe Football Association have not commented yet. Zimbabwe’s national team posted a photo of Lunga in prayer with the caption: “In God we trust.”
