AUGUST 13: WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?

🇿🇲 AUGUST 13: WHAT’S THE ALTERNATIVE?

By Whitney Mulobela

On August 13, Zambia makes another critical decision — one that will set the direction of our country for the next five years.

With less than 30 days to go, I have listened carefully to the campaigns, especially from the opposition — our governments-in-waiting. And I keep returning to one question:

What credible alternative is on offer?
Voting should be about making a country greater. So give me one compelling reason to vote for the opposition in this election.

My view: President Hichilema has lifted our politics above the usual slogans and put results on the table. What is the alternative to:

1. Free education — more than 2.5 million children back in school
2. A school feeding program now reaching over 4.5 million learners
3. CDF raised from a paltry K1.6 million to K40 million — building classrooms and health facilities, and putting desks under our children

4. An economy that was shrinking at -2.8% before 2021, now growing at nearly 5.6%
5. A stabilised Kwacha and inflation brought down to single digits
6. A revived mining sector — greenfield mines opening and closed mines back in production

7. Tackling our historic energy deficit, on the road to 10,000 megawatts
8. Law and order restored — an end to the impunity and lawlessness of yesteryear

Yes, more work remains. But the alternative must be better than what we have.

As the Americans say: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

On August 13, don’t just vote.

Compare. 🇿🇲

Happy Sunday
