Graham died on Saturday at 71 from a possible aortic dissection, a tear in the aorta caused by underlying cardiovascular disease.
Monday morning, before Governor Henry McMaster said a word, Trump posted on Truth Social that he recommended “Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline” to serve as interim senator, calling it “a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly.” Sen. Tim Scott backed her within hours. So did Majority Leader John Thune.
By Monday afternoon, it was done. McMaster stood beside her at the statehouse in Columbia and made it official.
He said she’d agreed “through tears” in the early hours of Sunday morning, and that he called Trump afterward, who “thought it was a great idea.”
Nordone has stayed out of the public eye. Her political record is empty, just appearances at her brother’s campaign events and a video praising him.
Graham became her legal guardian and adopted her at 13, after both their parents died within 15 months of each other. They grew up in a single room behind their parents bar and pool hall in Central, South Carolina.
Her term will end Jan. 3. Graham was up for reelection, so a special GOP primary is set for Aug 11, with the filing period opening July 21.
Democrat Annie Andrews is the nominee for November.
