Middle Eastern Interest in China’s J-35 Fighter Grows as F-35 Sales Remain Uncertain
China’s fifth-generation J-35 stealth fighter is reportedly attracting growing interest from several Middle Eastern nations, with the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt emerging as some of the most closely watched potential customers for the aircraft’s export variant.
According to multiple reports, these countries have increasingly turned their attention to the Chinese-made fighter after facing prolonged uncertainty over acquiring the U.S.-built F-35 Lightning II. Despite years of discussions and interest, Washington has yet to approve F-35 sales to several regional partners, citing concerns related to security, technology protection, and U.S. strategic policy.
The J-35, developed by China as a fifth-generation stealth combat aircraft for both domestic use and export, is being viewed as a possible alternative for countries seeking advanced air combat capabilities without the political restrictions often attached to Western arms sales.
If future procurement agreements are finalized, the deals could represent both a commercial and strategic setback for the United States. Washington has long dominated the Middle East’s defense market, with regional allies spending hundreds of billions of dollars on American aircraft, missile systems, and other military equipment over several decades.
A shift toward Chinese defense exports would not only reduce future revenues for the U.S. defense industry but could also strengthen Beijing’s influence in one of the world’s most strategically important regions. Analysts say such a development would signal a broader diversification of military partnerships among Gulf and Arab states, as they seek greater flexibility in sourcing advanced weapons.
No official contracts for J-35 purchases have been publicly announced, and the governments involved have not confirmed any final procurement decisions.
However, the reported interest highlights the growing competition between China and the United States in the global arms market and underscores Beijing’s expanding ambitions as a major exporter of advanced military technology.
