South African woman claims to be Malawian in order to flee with lover
A South African woman pretended to be an undocumented Malawian so that she could travel to Malawi for free with her lover. However, her plan failed after officials discovered that she had lied about her nationality.
The woman, who is from KwaZulu-Natal, was travelling with her lover and told authorities at the Musina Temporary Repatriation Centre that she was also a Malawian citizen.
While interviewing people before their repatriation, officials from the Malawian Embassy realised that her answers were inconsistent and her story did not add up. The Malawian officials became suspicious and handed her over to South African authorities for further checks.
After investigating, South African authorities confirmed that she was a South African citizen and not a Malawian national. She was prevented from leaving South Africa after South African authorities found that she had violated immigration laws.
It is believed that she wanted to take advantage of the voluntary repatriation programme so that she could travel to Malawi with her boyfriend at no cost.
