UPND SPENT NEARLY K40 MILLION TO BUY OFF INDEPENDENT MPS – MUNDUBILE
Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile has alleged that the ruling UPND is spending millions of kwacha to persuade independent parliamentary candidates to withdraw from the 2026 general election.
Speaking on HOT FM, Mr. Mundubile claimed that some independent candidates had been offered up to K20 million each to pull out of the race, arguing that the ruling party had money to influence candidates but lacked resources to address national food security.
“They have money to buy MPs, offering them K20 million to withdraw from contesting, but they don’t have money to buy maize,” Mr. Mundubile said.
In response, UPND member George Mtonga defended the party, insisting that any money allegedly used to persuade candidates was not government money but personal funds belonging to party members.
Mr. Mtonga stated that UPND members were free to use their own resources as they wished, adding that such funds should not be confused with public money.

Mr. Mundubile, you are already a cry baby before losing, how are going to cry on that day? Buying independent MPs is not an issue now. You can do the same if you have the money, buy the aspiring UPND MPs so that you remain with NRPUP only in some Constituencies. The bottom line is that whether that money was used to buy Indep MPs or not, it’s not from the national treasury.
