Ousmane Sonko Faces Legal Complaint Over Remarks About Touba

A legal complaint has been officially filed against former Senegalese Prime Minister and PASTEF leader Ousmane Sonko following controversial remarks he allegedly made during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters last weekend.

According to the complaint, Sonko reportedly stated that “dirty money has entered the holy city of Touba”.

The complaint, filed by the Collective of the Grandsons of Serigne Touba, argues that the statement “seriously undermines the honor, reputation, and image of Touba, as well as the dignity of its inhabitants”.

The collective emphasized that Touba, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on the values of faith, integrity, hard work, and justice.

They further claimed that the statement “casts discredit” on the holy city and “creates a general suspicion regarding its moral and spiritual integrity”.

The complainants have asked the Public Prosecutor to open an investigation to determine “the basis, scope, and any possible criminal consequences” of the remarks.

They are also requesting that Mr. Sonko be questioned so that he can clarify the meaning of his statements and provide the evidence on which they were based. In addition, they want all necessary investigations to be carried out to verify whether the allegations are substantiated.

Finally the collective is calling for legal proceedings if the facts justify them, including possible charges of defamation, spreading false information, or any other offense provided for under Senegalese law.
