UPND NOT WORRIED OVER EU PROBE INTO INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES’ WITHDRAWALS
By Josphat Mbewe
The ruling UPND says it is not threatened by the European Union-EU- Observer Mission’s move to investigate the withdrawal of most independent aspiring candidates ahead of the August 13, 2026, general election.
The European Union Observer Mission has indicated that it intends to review the circumstances surrounding the withdrawal of several candidates after they had successfully filed their nomination papers.
Speaking in an interview with Phoenix News, UPND Deputy Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu has questioned the European Union’s interest in what he described as Zambia’s democratic processes.
He says some candidates in the UPND decided to run as independents out of frustrations in which they later decided to withdraw after the party appealed to them through President Hakainde Hichilema.
Mr. Nkandu has further noted that Zambia is a sovereign nation with the authority to manage its own democratic affairs, adding that the withdrawal of aspiring candidates is part of the country’s democratic process.
He has since called on Zambians to remain united and carefully assess candidates ahead of the general elections, urging voters to elect leaders they trust.
