THE decision by the Supreme Court of South Africa to overturn the earlier High Court judgment that had allowed the Zambian government to repatriate the remains of former president Edgar Chagwa Lungu marks yet another significant chapter in a matter that has gripped both Zambia and South Africa for weeks. Equally important is the Zambian government’s response that it will not appeal the ruling and will instead respect the family’s wish regarding the burial of the former Head of State. That decision effectively brings the legal battle to an end. But while the court process may have concluded, several important questions remain unanswered.
