Don’t allow those who’ve regrouped to return to govt – HH
PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema says citizens should not vote for the PF, which he says has just regrouped into a new name.
He says citizens should not allow those who were beating them and ruined the economy to return to government by voting for the UPND.
Speaking during a community engagement in Nkeyema District, Western Province, Friday, President Hichilema said citizens should not think about going back to the PF.
“If you don’t vote, you’ll allow those who were beating you, those who troubled you, to come back in government. I know they’ve changed their name but they are the same people, a crocodile is a crocodile. If you don’t vote for UPND and you allow those to come back, you’ll go back to problems, you’ll lose your freedom, so let’s decide to vote for UPND. My message is that when we were in opposition, we suffered a lot, some of our people were killed here in Kaoma; Lawrence Banda was shot dead here in Kaoma during a by-election, we don’t want to go back to those days. We don’t want to go back to cadres in the markets, cadres in bus stops beating people, we want our freedom, [and] we want people to trade in the markets freely, as it is now. The same people who killed Lawrence Banda, Mapenzi Chibulo, Joseph Kaunda, Nsama Nsama, they were in that party PF, they’ve now changed the name but they are the same people. We must focus on the gains that we have made and protect those gains,” he said.
“Those people who created problems for us in the previous government, they’ve regrouped into another group and they are calling themselves a new name. They are the same people who were beating us, they are the same people who were destroying this economy, do not go back there, we must just move forward. That’s the decision we are making today. I have a clear message for you; backwards never, forward always. We are working hard to reduce the cost of living. To give you an example, just three days ago, we reduced the price of diesel from K32 per litre to K28 per litre. That should help to reduce the bus fares from here to Lusaka or to Mongu. Two days ago, we reduced the price of cement from K176 to K158, and I expect the traders to reduce the price of cement here. That is how we have continued to reduce the cost of living and we’ll continue doing that”.
The Head of State urged citizens to move forward with the UPND and avoid reversing the progress that the country had made.
“We must continue moving forward. We must continue soldiering and moving forward where development is. Some of these opposition are working with the independents and you should not give them a vote. These opposition are the ones who brought us problems in the past. So don’t follow the opposition or the independents, follow Hakainde. Today, we are here to make a very important decision. We must look at where we were when we were in opposition. Where are we today after we formed government? Where do we want to go tomorrow in our lives? We have walked a long, long, long road, 23 years in opposition as UPND, and we suffered there, we don’t want to go back there,” he said.
“In opposition, you could not get jobs easily, jobs were only for a few people [and] we suffered and suffered a lot. That’s where we were. Today, you are free. We have to make a decision, you want to go back where you were being beaten or you want to stay in freedom? We must continue in freedom, that’s why you need to vote on the 13th of August. We have brought about free education and you need to keep your vote on the UPND so that free education can continue moving forward. No mad president will be allowed to go in State House and stop free education, that’s why we’ve signed free education into law”.
President Hichilema urged citizens to only vote for UPND candidates if they want development to continue.
“This Hakainde has not sent any candidate here other than the UPND adopted candidate. Those who are cheating you that I’ve sent them here to campaign for themselves and HH are lying. How can I support another candidate and not my own candidate, where is the sense in that? You can’t say you love Hakainde, Hakainde loves you and then you vote for a councillor who is not Hakanide’s councillor, aikona. I have not asked anybody to stand here other than [Kapelwa] Mbangweta, other than my council chairperson, other than the MPs. All the UPND structures, move away from the independents. Any UPND official who is supporting the independent, that is wrong. All UPND officials, come and support official UPND candidates. No vote should go to the independent or opposition,” said President Hichilema.
“We must all vote for the UPND, that is how people who love each other work. This election, we are voting for the chain, a suit, everybody must be UPND. Those who are independent candidates and from other parties want to cheat you, you the UPND members, you vote for them, then they want you to vote for the opposition as president, to take your vote to the opposition, yet they never supported you. They never worked for you, never delivered for you, Hakainde is delivering for you, now you want to divide the vote, Hakainde can lose by one vote; every vote matters, don’t make a mistake. Yes, we have worked hard but there’s more work to be done, such as working on the roads, we’ll continue working on the roads, improving the roads here and the rest of the country, that can only be possible if you vote for us”.
