The United States’ 2026 FIFA World Cup journey has come to an end after a convincing 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16.
Belgium struck first through Charles De Ketelaere in the 9th minute, but the Americans fought back when Malik Tillman curled home a superb direct free-kick to level the score in the 31st minute.
The joy was ephemeral. Belgium regained the lead just two minutes later before taking complete control after the break. Hans Vanaken capitalized on a costly error by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 57th minute, and Romelu Lukaku sealed the emphatic victory with a stoppage-time goal.
With the defeat, all three 2026 World Cup co-hosts; he United States, Mexico, and Canada have now been eliminated from the tournament.
Belgium now advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in a mouth-watering European showdown.
