South African billionaire and CAF President Patrice Motsepe has responded to growing speculation about whether he intends to run for ANC president ahead of the party’s 2027 elective conference.
When asked directly, Motsepe did not confirm or deny that he would seek the ANC presidency. Instead, he said he believes the best way for him to serve South Africa is outside politics, adding that he does not need a political position to make a meaningful contribution to the country.
Pressed further on whether he would run, Motsepe repeated that he wants to continue working with all political parties rather than campaign for office. He said South Africa has many capable leaders and that he would support whoever is elected to lead the ANC. He also stressed that the country needs unity and cooperation across political lines to address its challenges.
His comments come after months of speculation fuelled by the now-defunct PM27 campaign, which promoted him as a potential successor to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Despite the rumours, Motsepe has continued to distance himself from any formal presidential campaign.
