Former Nkana Member of Parliament Hon. Binwell Mpundu has strongly condemned President Hakainde Hichilema over remarks he made during a campaign rally in Sikongo District, Western Province, accusing the Head of State of promoting tribal politics instead of uniting the nation.
Speaking in Sikongo last week during his campaign tour of Western Province, President Hichilema told residents not to vote for the opposition, stating that in the past people from Western Province who travelled to Lusaka were denied jobs and mistreated because they were Lozi.
Reacting to the President’s remarks, Mpundu said the statements were divisive and capable of creating unnecessary tribal tension in a country that has enjoyed decades of peaceful coexistence.
“We are very interesting people full of pretence. In fact, we are cowards as Zambians. The President took nothing to North-Western, Southern and Western provinces other than preaching tribalism, yet we have all pretended as if we did not hear him,” Mpundu said.
He said the President’s claims that Lozis were denied government jobs because of their tribe were false, arguing that many Lozi citizens served in government long before the UPND came into office.
Mpundu also rejected the President’s statement that Lozis and Tongas were beaten at Lusaka’s Intercity Bus Terminus simply because of their ethnicity, saying political violence that occurred in previous years was linked to party affiliation rather than tribal identity.
He further criticized President Hichilema for what he described as selectively remembering victims of political violence. Mpundu said while the President frequently speaks about Chibulo Mapenzi, Lawrence Banda and Vespers Shimuzhila, he rarely mentions other victims such as Jackson Kungo and others who lost their lives in separate incidents.
According to Mpundu, every Zambian life deserves equal recognition regardless of political affiliation.
He warned that leaders should avoid campaign messages that could deepen tribal divisions and instead promote unity, peace and national cohesion.
“We all need to rise up and stop the President from preaching hatred and divisions as he campaigns. Tribalism can set this country on fire. The President needs to stop it,” Mpundu said.
Mpundu urged Zambians to reject tribal politics and safeguard the country’s unity as the August 13 General Election approaches.

President HH took nothing to the northwestern, Southern and Western Provinces other than going to preach Tribalism and yet we have all pretended like we have not heard him set this country on a dangerous path of tribal divisions.
In Sikongo, he went to lie that the people of western province were being denied Jobs on the previous government. That is not true and we all know it. There are too many Lozis that were employed in government before UPND came into power and we all know that.
He went on to lie that the people of Southern province and Western Province were being beaten upon arriving in Lusaka at intercity for simply being Lozis and Tonga. Again that is not true and a very dangerous statement to be made by a leader.
Imagine if a Bemba made a statement to suggest how bembas are being sidelined for employment and promotions in the UPND government how the police would have moved very fast to charge him with hate speech. If what the President is preaching is not hate speech then what is hate speech.
President HH has been preaching about the Chibulo Mapenzi who was shot by police; he has been Preaching about the death of Lawrence Banda who was killed by a PF cadre and urging the people of Kaoma not to forget those who killed Lawrence Banda. But interestingly when he went to the North Western he forgot to talk about Jackson Kungo who was killed by UPND cadres not with a gun or poison but with stones and sticks while they recorded the gruesome murder.
For president HH, the killing of Jackson Kungo who was a provincial chairperson of PF at the time does not matter and he won’t even talk about it anywhere, but he will be quick to talk about Vespers who was killed by Tear gases at UNZA. He will talk about Mapenzi who was killed by a stray bullet from the Police.
President HH could not even remember that his government, through the Police, opened fire and killed young people in Mufumbwe. He won’t even mention that his government opened fire and killed a Young boy in Mufulira through ZNS, all those deaths do not matter.
The President won’t even talk about the young student who died at UNZA by falling into a trench carelessly left open by ZNS, but he is quick to talk about Vespers who died from tear gases.
The President has been suggesting the other regions hate him for simply being Tonga and coming from Bweengwa while he forgets that the same regions gave him over a million votes in 2021.
It is very interesting how the people that hate him would give him 1.3 million votes.
Let us be very realistic here fellow citizens. The truth is that there is no Tonga or Lozi who was being beaten at Intercity for simply being Tonga or Lozi.
The President is lying and simply wants the Tongas and Lozis to hate the people from other regions. It is possible that UPND members could have been harassed or beaten for wearing UPND regalia at intercity and not to say Tongas or Lozis were being harassed and beaten at intercity. We all know that equally PF supporters were beaten and chased from their homes in Southern province during the 2021 elections but it’s not true to suggest that it was Bembas or Easterners who were being beaten and chased from Southern province in 2021.
We all need to rise up and stop the president from preaching hatred and divisions as he goes campaigning. Tribalism can set this country on fire. The President needs to stop it.
ALENI.
