GHANA REPORTEDLY TURNS DOWN PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA’S STATE VISIT REQUEST AS XENOPHOBIA CONCERNS CONTINUE TO STRAIN DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO AFRICAN NATIONS
Reports claim that Ghana has declined a proposed state visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa amid ongoing concerns over recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in South Africa.
According to the reports, Ghanaian officials were concerned that proceeding with a high-level visit while public anger remains high could trigger protests and diplomatic tensions. The reported visit had been expected to take place in early August.
The reports further allege that Ghana wants South Africa to demonstrate stronger measures to protect foreign nationals and address xenophobic violence before any future high-level engagements are considered.
At the time of writing, neither the South African Presidency nor the Ghanaian government has publicly confirmed these reports.
If confirmed, the development would mark a significant diplomatic setback and highlights the growing regional concern over xenophobic violence in South Africa.
