MNANGAGWA EXTENDS HIS PRESIDENTIAL TERM TO 2030 AFTER CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BECOMES LAW

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed into law a constitutional amendment extending his term in office to 2030, following the enactment of changes that also overhaul the country’s electoral system.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana confirmed the development todayTuesday, announcing on X that the Constitutional Amendment (No. 3) Act has received presidential assent after being approved by both houses of Parliament last month.
The new law extends the presidential term from five years to seven years and postpones the next general elections, which had been scheduled for 2028. It also changes the method of electing the president, providing for future presidents to be elected by Parliament rather than through a direct popular vote.
The amendment means President Mnangagwa, 83, will remain in office until 2030, despite previously being expected to leave office at the end of his constitutionally mandated second term in 2028.
