The wife of former Gabonese President Ali Bongo is under official investigation by Swiss prosecutors for money laundering
The wife of former Gabonese President Ali Bongo is under official investigation by Swiss prosecutors for money laundering—yet another stain on a dynasty already drowning in corruption.
Swiss authorities confirmed that Sylvia Bongo has been targeted in a probe since 2023, after she allegedly funneled several million euros into a Geneva bank account—funds prosecutors suspect were sourced from criminal enterprise.
Last year, Sylvia and her son Nouroudin were convicted in absentia by a Libreville court and sentenced to 20 years each for embezzlement, bribery, and concealment. They had fled the country months before the verdict lande
Now living comfortably in London, the family still keeps vast financial assets stocked away in Switzerland—an offshore lifeline for plundered wealth.
During former President Ali Bongo’s incapacitation in Morocco—where he was confined to a wheelchair—Sylvia and her son amassed unchecked power, turning the presidency into a family affairs.
But in 2023, after 56 years of Bongo rule, Gabon’s military finally swept them from power.
Sylvia and Son were detained for 20 months before being allowed to leave—free to enjoy their fortunes abroad while their people demand justice.
