Things will be better if you vote us back, assures Nalumango
VICE-President Mutale Nalumango says the UPND government has fought for a better Zambia under difficult circumstances.
Speaking during a rally in Mafinga South, Wednesday, Vice-President Nalumango urged residents that things will be better if they re-elect the UPND government.
“Thirty thousand people were employed under our government. This is a key indicator that President HH is for the youths of this country. Talk about teachers and nurses, we employed them. Some who completed school years ago had no hope to be employed, but we employed them. That’s the government Hakainde has led, a progressive government. Is that a man you can say you can’t vote for? Then who do you want? Someone to come and destroy the country? There’s a saying that goes ‘ihikwanka bachimwena kumampalanya’ (The one who is ready to help you, you will see by their position and their behaviour),” she said.
“You have seen how this government has fought for a better Zambia under very difficult circumstances. We found this economy destroyed, but this government, bit by bit, started bringing back our economy. Our economy is growing, so if you vote us back in power, things will be better. Even our youths that did not manage to attain an education are still benefiting from the skills empowerment programme because we know that every youth is important. Even a carpenter brings growth to our economy. A skill equally contributes to the economic growth of the country”.
Vice-President Nalumango said the farmers were currently happy with the price of maize that the UPND government had set in 2025.
“When you harvest your maize, are you telling me that you sell everything? God has given us wisdom that when we harvest, we will still keep some in case we experience a drought. We will still be able to eat. It’s the same thing they are talking about with reserves. You have heard them say something about reserves. They are saying we need to empty the reserves to feed the poor. They want you farmers to reduce the price of maize that you are selling so that mealie meal should be cheaper. Is that making sense honestly? Let’s not just be hearing these things. HH changed the price of buying maize from K180, that’s how much you were selling a bag of maize, it is now being sold at K340. He put a K160. I know you farmers are happy with this price not the price that the opposition offered to you. Now the opposition wants us to reduce the price of maize being sold and start buying mealie meal at a cheaper price,” she said.
“HH thinks about the farmers, not the opposition that wants to be buying from you at cheap prices so that the farmer continues suffering. Is that how it should be? Today, if we use that method, we will find ourselves in a situation where we do not have maize because the farmers will stop farming maize. Can you just be planting without benefiting anything from it? Now, when they come back, we will see that mealie meal will be less in the country. Others will remember that we used to have a shortage of mealie meal in the country. In our time, we used to experience the shortage of mealie meal before we were a lot in the country because of our past leaders. These people destroyed the country”.
Vice-President Nalumango wondered how Zambians could trust the opposition who she says “destroyed” the country.
“These (opposition) people destroyed our country. We can’t even stress the fact that they failed to continue with developmental projects because the money that they had borrowed had finished. Just look at this police station that was constructed a long time ago. They failed to finish it, but when we came into government, we finished it. These people in 2020 announced that they had stopped projects in the country which were less than 80 percent complete because they didn’t have money. Can you say that they were a good government, or that they governed us well? We had no idea until other countries started telling us that we have borrowed and failed to pay back. Wherever they needed help, they were told they have borrowed and don’t pay back the money,” Vice–President Nalumango said.
“That’s why you heard that they have defaulted. I’m begging you, I’m here so that you know the truth. Even the Bible says you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. How can we trust the same people that destroyed the country? After HH has cleaned the economy, now they want to come back. I’ll be shocked if you vote for such people. They just want to come and eat the money that has been made by HH. These people borrowed, on top of borrowing, they finished everything. Can you say that these people are good for us? We got to a point where the IMF refused to get into an agreement with us because of the image our friends left. But HH came and liberated us from this debt. Even when we want to borrow, we can still borrow, but that’s not HH’s plan. His plan is to reduce the debt. This is why you are enjoying free education”.
She further added that President Hichilema had promoted unity in the country.
“The other thing is President Hichilema is one to bring unity. He does not divide because of tribe but sees us all as Zambian people because unity is the only reason as to why we can progress as a country. That’s why our party’s name is United Party for National Development. His manifesto is entirely based on taking the country forward. Despite not being immensely voted for by the people in the northern part of the country, he still chose a minister from the northern part. He didn’t say that you have refused me, so I won’t give you a minister,” said Vice-President Nalumango.
“Secondly, when he was voted for, he didn’t say money will be allocated just to the residents of Lusaka. He said money should be shared equally in the country because they know what developmental projects they need. That’s why he allocated K40 million through CDF to the people of Mafinga South from K1.6 million. Can you say he’s a President of division? Today, you can think having new constituencies is easy, but the reason he did that is because the space consuming the CDF money should reduce so that development is evident. If he didn’t separate Mafinga into two, you would have just benefited K40 million, but the whole of Mafinga now has K80 million in total. Mafinga South will not be the same. We have removed tribalism”.
