RDA signs contracts to rehabilitate Livingstone-Sesheke, Chipata-Lundazi roads


THE Road Development Agency (RDA) has signed contracts for the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Livingstone-Sesheke and Chipata-Lundazi roads.
In a statement issued, Friday, RDA Chief Communication and Corporate Affairs Manager Anthony Mulowa stated that the Livingstone-Sesheke Road contract, covering approximately 212 kilometres, had been awarded to Sino-Hydro Corporation Limited in a joint venture with Nchifar Enterprises Limited.
He explained that the scope of works will also include the rehabilitation and upgrading of 10 kilometres of township roads in Livingstone and five kilometres in Sesheke District.
“The Road Development Agency (RDA) has signed major contracts for the rehabilitation, upgrading and maintenance of key road infrastructure on the Livingstone-Sesheke Road and the Chipata-Lundazi Road, marking a significant step towards improving connectivity, enhancing road safety and supporting economic growth in Southern, Western and Eastern Provinces.The Livingstone-Sesheke Road contract, covering approximately 212 kilometres, has been awarded to Sino-Hydro Corporation Limited in Joint Venture with Nchifar Enterprises Limited. The project has been divided into two lots to facilitate efficient implementation. Lot one covers the section from the Livingstone-Sesheke (M10) Road km 0 at T1 Junction to Km 65 at Kazungula Turnoff and Km 165 near Sirnungoma Turnoff to Km 200 in Sesheke Boma. The scope of works also includes the rehabilitation and upgrading of 10 kilometres of township roads in Livingstone District and five kilometres of township roads in Sesheke District,” he stated .
“The contract for Lot 1 has been signed at a value of ZMW1,538,439,094.41 (VAT Inclusive). The project duration is 30 calendar months, comprising six months for design and 24 months for construction. Lot two covers the remaining section from kilometre 165 to Sesheke District and includes the rehabilitation and upgrading of 5 kilometres of township roads in Kazungula District and 5 kilometres of township roads in Mwandi District. The works will entail upgrading the road sections to bituminous standard. The contract for Lot 2 has been awarded to the same contractor at a value of ZMW1,736,945,453.11 (VAT Inclusive) and will also be implemented over a 30-month period, consisting of six months for design and 24 months for construction. The Agency has already issued both the site possession certificates and commencement orders, officially signalling the start of the projects. The contractor has commenced the design phase and is currently mobilising equipment to site in preparation for full-scale construction works”.
He added that RDA had mobilized equipment through the Mwandi Town council to undertake remedial works on the most affected sections.
“To address immediate challenges affecting motorists, particularly sections where heavy trucks are getting stuck, the RDA has mobilised equipment through Mwandi Town Council to undertake urgent remedial works on the most affected sections. These emergency interventions are expected to be completed within the next few days to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic while preparations for the main works continue. The contractor is expected to complete mobilisation shortly, after which maintenance and rehabilitation activities will intensify across both contract lots,” he added.
Mulowa stated that RDA had also signed a contract with China Geo Engineering Corporation for the Chipata-Lundazi road.
“In a similar development, the RDA has signed a contract with China Geo Engineering Corporation for the rehabilitation of the Chipata-Lundazi Road. The project covers the section from kilometre 42 to kilometre 90, continuing from the previously completed works undertaken by another contractor between kilometre 0 and kilometre 42. The project also includes periodic maintenance of the road from kilometre 90 to kilometre 181 in Lundazi, as well as the upgrading of 5 kilometres of urban roads in Lumezi District and 5 kilometres of urban roads in Lundazi District to bituminous standard. The contract has been awarded at a value of ZMW1,603,937,095.88 (VAT Inclusive), and has a duration of 30 calendar months, comprising six months for design and 24 months for construction,” stated Mulowa.
“The contract became effective following its signing on 6th June 2026, and the contractor has already mobilised to site and commenced preliminary activities necessary for the preparation of detailed designs. The Agency expects to receive the completed sectional designs by the end of July 2026, after which full-scale construction works will commence. The RDA remains committed to improving the country’s road network through strategic investments in infrastructure that enhance mobility, facilitate trade, support tourism and improve access to economic and social services. The implementation of these projects will not only improve road conditions along key transport corridors but will also provide safer and more efficient travel for motorists and communities in the affected districts”.
