BREAKING: Russia Strikes Grain Ship with Cruise Missiles, Killing Five Crew Members
Russia has launched a deadly missile strike on a civilian cargo vessel transporting Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea, killing at least five crew members and leaving five others missing, according to the Ukrainian Navy.
Ukrainian officials said the merchant ship, sailing under the flag of Guinea-Bissau, was departing a Ukrainian port when it was targeted by three Russian Kh-59/Kh-69 air-launched cruise missiles. Images released following the attack show the vessel heavily damaged, with thick smoke billowing from its deck.
The attack marks the latest escalation against commercial shipping linked to Ukraine’s grain export corridor, heightening concerns over the safety of civilian maritime traffic in the Black Sea. The region remains a critical route for global grain supplies, and repeated attacks on merchant vessels continue to threaten international food security and disrupt global trade.
The incident also highlights the differing nature of maritime operations carried out by both sides in the conflict. Ukraine has previously targeted Russia’s sanctioned “shadow fleet” ships accused of helping Moscow evade international sanctions and support its war effort primarily to disrupt logistics and economic activities. By contrast, this latest strike involved the reported use of precision cruise missiles against a civilian cargo ship carrying grain, resulting in multiple casualties and extensive damage.
