Houthis Open New Front With Threatened Red Sea Blockade
Yemen’s Houthi movement has announced a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, raising concerns that the regional crisis could expand beyond the U.S.-Iran confrontation and further disrupt global shipping.
According to reports, the Houthis are focusing on the Bab al-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea, key routes for Saudi trade and energy exports. Maritime security analysts warn that vessels linked to Saudi Arabia, including oil tankers and cargo ships calling at Red Sea ports such as Jeddah, could face an increased threat.
The move is seen as an attempt to undermine Saudi Arabia’s alternative export routes. With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz facing heightened risks, Saudi oil exports have increasingly relied on pipelines crossing the kingdom to Red Sea terminals. A sustained threat in the Red Sea could therefore place additional pressure on regiconal energy flows.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the measure was a response to what the group describes as years of Saudi restrictions on Yemen, as well as recent tensions surrounding Sanaa International Airport.
Saudi-led coalition forces have signaled that they are prepared to increase maritime security operations in the area and provide protection for commercial shipping. Meanwhile, shipping and insurance markets are closely monitoring developments, with concerns that any disruption to traffic through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait could have broader implications for global trade and energy supplies.
