FORMER STATISTICIAN-GENERAL PALI LEHOHLA SAYS SOUTH AFRICA’S ECONOMIC CRISIS IS BEING DRIVEN BY CORRUPTION, A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND THE COUNTRY’S GROWING DEPENDENCE ON BORROWING
Former Statistician-General Pali Lehohla has voiced serious concerns about the direction of South Africa’s economy, arguing that the country’s economic challenges are rooted in corruption and poor economic decision-making.
Speaking to eNCA, Lehohla said South Africa’s government has failed to implement economic models capable of delivering sustainable growth. He argued that without a clear strategy to grow the economy, create jobs and attract investment, the country will continue to face slow economic progress.
Lehohla also warned about South Africa’s increasing reliance on borrowing, saying that rising debt could place additional pressure on future generations if economic growth does not improve. According to him, borrowing fcan support development in some cases, but it becomes a major concern when debt continues to increase without corresponding economic expansion. Cc
His comments come as South Africa continues to face challenges including high unemployment, slow economic growth, rising public debt and ongoing concerns about service delivery and investor confidence
