HERO OF UKRAINE IHOR SKYBYUK APPOINTED CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF

HERO OF UKRAINE IHOR SKYBYUK APPOINTED CHIEF OF THE GENERAL STAFF

Ukraine has appointed Major General Ihor Skybyuk, the former commander of the 80th Separate Air Assault Brigade, as the new Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Skybyuk earned widespread respect for his leadership during the Kharkiv counteroffensive in 2022. Under his command, the 80th Air Assault Brigade played a key role in the liberation of Izium, one of the campaign’s most decisive victories, helping shatter Russian defenses and forcing a rapid withdrawal across much of Kharkiv Oblast.

For his leadership and battlefield achievements, Skybyuk was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, the country’s highest state honor.

His appointment was backed by the newly appointed Commander-in-Chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi, as well as Acting Minister of Defence Yevhen Khmara, reflecting a continued emphasis on promoting commanders with proven combat records rather than political credentials.

Skybyuk represents a generation of Ukrainian officers forged by years of war. His rise to the General Staff signals that operational success on the battlefield is increasingly shaping the leadership of Ukraine’s armed forces as the military continues to adapt and modernize for a prolonged conflict.

Rather than advancing through bureaucracy, Skybyuk has earned his position through results in combat—a trend that has become increasingly evident in Ukraine’s military leadership since the start of the full-scale invasion. 🇺🇦
