Ukraine Unveils Reusable Liutyi Drone Capable of Carrying Air-to-Surface Missiles
Ukraine has unveiled a new version of its An-196 Liutyi unmanned aerial vehicle at the Farnborough Airshow, transforming what was previously a one-way attack drone into a reusable missile carrier.
According to the presentation, the upgraded Liutyi can carry up to four compact air-to-surface missiles, each reportedly capable of striking targets at ranges of up to 200 kilometers. Unlike earlier one-way drones that were destroyed during their missions, the new system is designed to launch its missiles, return to base, be reloaded, and fly additional combat sorties.
Military analysts describe the concept as an unmanned mini-bomber, offering Ukraine a more cost-effective and sustainable strike capability. By allowing the drone to survive its mission, the system could significantly reduce operational costs while increasing the tempo of precision attacks.
If deployed successfully on a large scale, the upgraded Liutyi could present a more complex challenge for Russian air defenses. Instead of intercepting only incoming drones, Russian forces would also have to contend with the missiles launched from those drones, potentially stretching defensive resources.
The announcement highlights Ukraine’s continued investment in indigenous drone technology as it seeks to expand its long-range precision strike capabilities and increase the effectiveness of its unmanned aerial systems in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
