Nigerian Senate Warns South Africa Over Xenophobic Attacks, Orders Fresh Probe

The Nigerian Senate has warned that the country may review its diplomatic relations with South Africa if renewed xenophobic attacks against Nigerians continue.

The warning followed a motion raised by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong over reports of a June 30, 2026 ultimatum allegedly issued to Nigerians living in South Africa, which lawmakers described as a threat to their safety, businesses and livelihoods.

During Tuesday’s plenary, senators condemned repeated attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and called on the Federal Government to demand stronger protection guarantees from South African authorities.

Some lawmakers, including Senator Salihu Mustapha and Senator Abdul Ningi, called for tougher measures, including the possibility of cutting diplomatic ties if the attacks persist.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole also suggested that profits from South African companies operating in Nigeria could be considered for compensation of victims.

However, the Senate adopted a cautious approach after Senator Yahaya Abdullahi warned that the attacks could be linked to broader political tensions in South Africa and urged careful investigation.

The Senate resolved that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa should compile records of affected Nigerians and seek justice, prosecution of offenders and possible compensation.

Lawmakers also directed the Senate Committees on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs to review previous resolutions and agreements between Nigeria and South Africa and submit a report within two weeks.

The Senate reaffirmed Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa’s liberation struggle but stressed that protecting Nigerians abroad remains a priority.
