UPND has hired more civil servants than any previous govt – Mayangwa
LIVINGSTONE Central Constituency parliamentary candidate Dillon Mayangwa says the new dawn government has so far upgraded 9,226 teachers out of the more than 50,000 backlog left by the PF administration.
Mayangwa has also dismissed claims that he is not a resident of Livingstone, stating that he grew up in Maramba residential area.
“I plead with all teachers and civil servants, do not take yourselves back into a violent spiral. We have been engaging teachers, nurses and other public sector workers’ unions on what they want. We have recruited a record number of teachers, health workers and other essential workers in four years compared to any other previous government. On the issue of teacher upgrades, contrary to allegations by Brian Mundubile that we have not been upgrading teachers who have improved their academic qualifications, ZCTU, the mother body, has already informed the nation on what we have done regarding teacher upgrades,” Mayangwa said.
He quoted ZCTU president Blake Mulala as saying the PF left a teacher upgrade deficit of more than 50,000 as of 2021.
“But this has been reduced because we have so far upgraded over 9,226 teachers,” Mayangwa added.
He further stated that former ZCTU president Leonard Hikaumba, ZCTU and the Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia were unhappy with Mundubile’s remarks about public workers and the police.
“If you want to be Head of State, how can you belittle your own workers? How do you insult the person who serves you and then eat the food they have prepared? It is insane. This clearly shows that these people are not leaders. They are dictators and insulters who will unleash cadres on public workers and even poor marketeers,” Mayangwa said.
He urged Zambians to vote for President Hakainde Hichilema and his team, describing UPND as “the only true progressive party”.
On Tuesday, ZCTU president Blake Mulala said the teacher upgrade issue was neglected by the PF.
“We, as workers, raised the matter with the new dawn administration and, due to their open-door policy, we engaged them. They have been dismantling the huge backlog of un-upgraded teachers. Since we engaged them, more than 9,226 teachers have been upgraded,” Mulala said.
Mulala also called on the opposition to stop threatening public workers, who have the right to vote for candidates of their choice.
“As workers, we still remember how the same people now threatening civil servants used cadres to harass innocent civil servants, lock offices and threaten to burn them. That time is gone. We are calling for issue-based campaigns and peaceful coexistence. We have one country, and those campaigning contrary to this must not be given the chance to walk the corridors of power, which they will then use against the people,” said Mulala.
