It’d be unwise to export maize given poor rainfall forecast – Sichinga


FORMER Agriculture minister Bob Sichinga says it would be unwise for the country to continue exporting maize given forecasts of below-average rainfall for the 2026/2027 farming season. Sichinga says despite the projected maize harvest of 4.9 million metric tonnes, the country risks facing shortages if it continues exporting maize while also losing significant quantities due to poor storage. Recently, the Zambia Statistics Agency (ZamStats) disclosed that projected maize production for the 2025/2026 farming season is 4.9 million metric tonnes, an increase of 27.8 percent from the previous season.
