HH- “A LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA”

HH- “A LETTER TO THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA”

In an open letter issued to mark Unity Day yesterday, President Hichilema urged the nation to embrace the enduring principle of “One Zambia, One Nation”, describing national cohesion as the driving force behind the country’s democratic progress, economic recovery and social development.

Reflecting on the 2021 general election, President Hichilema said Zambians had demonstrated their commitment to democracy by choosing peaceful change through the ballot box.

“In 2021, we chose peace. We chose the ballot over the fist, the future over fear. That choice changed the course of this nation. This year, let us choose peace again. Together, let us ensure this becomes the most peaceful election Zambia has ever known,” he said.

The President said this year’s elections offered an opportunity to strengthen democratic representation, expressing optimism that the country would elect one of its most inclusive Parliaments, with increased representation for women, young people, persons with disabilities and other traditionally under-represented groups.

He also challenged aspiring leaders to place national service above personal ambition, stressing that public office should always be exercised in the interests of the country. He highlighted the UPND’s achievements, “the Kwacha has steadied. Jobs are returning, and our businesses from the mines to the tourist lodges can plan for the future again.” The President added that these achievements must be protected and “can only be defended together.”

“To those who seek office, we hold ourselves to a simple standard, and we ask the same of you. Public office is service. The national interest comes first at all times. A campaign is a chance to offer ideas for the good of the country, not a contest for personal gain,” the President said.

President Hichilema further encouraged citizens to participate peacefully in the electoral process and safeguard the democratic achievements made since 2021.

Acknowledging that Zambia had faced difficult periods in recent years, President Hichilema said the country’s resilience had been built on the willingness of its people to remain united despite their differences.

“It is the choice this country makes, again and again, to stand together as one people across every tribe, every province and every church,” he said.

He added that the spirit of national unity was evident in the everyday lives of Zambians, from farmers and traders to teachers, healthcare workers and business owners, all working collectively to build the nation.

Despite the challenges encountered along the way, the President said unity continued to be Zambia’s greatest asset and the foundation for its future progress.
Our President, you never cease to amaze me. This is not the same language you use when you are in Southern Province. Why do you tell people in Southern Province that when you vote for the opposition you will stop going to Lusaka because they will be beating you up ? These words can never come from someone trying to unite the nation. These are words of desperation, these are words to sow seeds of division in the country. If these words were spoken by an ordinary person especially from other provinces, today they would be in court facing hate speech. It is this kind of hypocrisy that Zambians are tired of. In your letter to the Zambian people, one would expect you to tell the Zambian people about you unfulfilled promises. Here you are as always, pretending like you never even made those pronouncements about the Price of Mealie meal, the Price of Fertilizer, Loadshedding , Youth Empowerment through Small Scale Mining Licences. These are the things the Zambian people will judge you against because they came from your own mouth. The Zambian people will not judge you based on what the opposition are saying about you but on what you promised them.
