Uganda’s 🇺🇬 President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni said he held talks with South African 🇿🇦 President Cyril Ramaphosa over the treatment of Ugandans in South Africa.

Museveni, who has supported the ANC for over 60 years through both words and actions, expressed disappointment over the treatment of his fellow Ugandans, saying, “It is as if you have betrayed us, because South Africans are our brothers and sisters.”

He said Ugandans should not be labelled “xeno,” describing the term as offensive and divisive.

He explained that “xeno” comes from Greek and means “alien.” “In my conversation with Cyril Ramaphosa, I asked him, am I the one who is xeno? Who is xeno?” he said.

Museveni also said people who entered South Africa through irregular channels should be dealt with according to the law, but should not face discrimination.

Museveni urged Uganda 🇺🇬 to continue welcoming Africans and warned against any retaliation against South Africans living or investing in the country, including companies such as MTN. He said, “That is exactly what the enemies of Africa want, for us to fight among ourselves.”

He announced that Ugandans whose property was destroyed should document their losses for compensation, while each returning household will receive UGX 2 million.

He also expressed condolences to the families of the three Ugandans who died. The remarks were made during the pass-out of more than 1,000 Ugandans evacuated from South Africa.
