MUNDUBILE’S HAIR SYTLE INFLUENCING LIES DURING PUBLIC RALLIES SAYS THABO KAWANA.
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has taken a humorous but sharp swipe at National Republican Party for United Progress (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, accusing him of making unrealistic campaign promises and lacking a convincing manifesto.
Speaking on the News Diggers podcast Mind Your Own Business, hosted by Joseph Mwenda, Kawana sarcastically questioned whether Mundubile’s hairstyle was influencing what he described as a growing list of unbelievable promises.
“The man is good and full of energy, but at this rate he will promise anything. Tomorrow he may promise excavators for marketeers to harvest tomatoes, air dryers for maize farmers, and every other promise people want to hear,” Kawana joked.
He argued that Mundubile had abandoned serious policy discussions in favour of making attention grabbing pledges, adding that the opposition leader appeared to be relying on social media narratives rather than presenting a detailed manifesto.
Kawana also dismissed Mundubile’s promise to extend free education to colleges and universities, pointing out that the Patriotic Front administration, in which Mundubile served, abolished meal allowances for students in higher learning institutions.
“How can he now promise to do better when it was his own government that removed meal allowances? Leaders must be credible and realistic,” Kawana said.
In another sarcastic remark, Kawana suggested that perhaps too much sunshine on Mundubile’s head was affecting his judgment, saying politicians should be careful not to make promises they cannot fulfil.
On the possibility of Mundubile winning the August 13 General Elections, Kawana said he would have no difficulty vacating his office, describing political transitions as a normal part of democracy.
He also defended the UPND government’s approach to the civil service, saying President Hakainde Hichilema rejected calls to dismiss officials perceived to be aligned with the previous Patriotic Front administration after the 2021 elections.
“When we formed government, some people wanted all PF-aligned civil servants removed. President Hichilema asked, ‘Where do you want these people to go? Aren’t they Zambians?’ That is why many remained in service, and some, including the Secretary to the Cabinet, were even promoted,” Kawana said.
